Water Meters - Saving water, saving energy and saving money

Water meters give you more control over your bills – as you only pay for what you use. A water meter could benefit you if you tend to not use a lot of water and with the current economic climate it’s good to keep bills down as much as possible.

Small families, couples or individuals living in small houses or flats may like the sound of a water meter as you’ll only pay for what you use instead of having to pay a monthly bill for water you may not be using.

Pay less for your water

Everybody pays the same rate for their water, based on the rateable value of our property, except for those on a water meter, even though all houses may use different amounts.

Some households may only use small amounts of water because maybe everyone is out at work all day or you are an individual who needs minimal amounts. This is a good example of where a water meter could save money. On the other hand, if you are a keen gardener or a large family, an unmeasured bill is probably better value for you.

How do I get a water meter?

Your water supplier should fit a water meter free of charge to most people in England, Scotland and Wales. You can request to have a water meter installed and as soon as it’s running you’ll only be charged for what you use. You also have the right to switch back to an unmeasured charge within 12 months of it being installed – so you can compare a few months between the two and decide what is best for you!

Most households in England, Wales and Scotland. However, there are circumstances when a water company can refuse to install a meter if it is unreasonably impractical or expensive to do so - if shared water supply pipes need to be separated, for example.

If it is impossible to have a meter installed, then your water company should offer you an 'assessed charge' where you pay a bill based on an estimate of your water supply usage or what other metered customers in your area pay, or you can carry on paying an unmeasured bill based on the rateable value of your property.
